The European Schools "type 1" are official educational institutions controlled jointly by the government of all member states of the European Union. National education departments are responsible for appointing full-time staff. Inspectors from the national education departments decide the curriculum and visit the schools regularly. The member states recognize the years of study followed at a European School as equivalent to the corresponding years in the national systems. They recognize the leaving certificate (European Baccalaureate) as giving entrance to the universities in their respective countries.
The European Schools "type 1" have been established for children of staff of EU institutions, but other pupils are admitted if there are free places. The school in Bergen was created in connection with the European Union Research Centre at Petten, 20 kilometers north of Bergen in the province of Noord-Holland. It is the only European School in The Netherlands.
