The American International School of Costa Rica, AIS (formerly the Costa Rica Academy) was founded in 1970. AIS is a private coeducational day school, which offers an educational program from preschool through twelve grade for students of all nationalities. AIS is truly an international school, with over 200 students that represent over 25 different nationalities. In 2006-2007, enrollment reached 220 with 90 in Elementary, 50 in Middle School, and 80 in High School.
The school is located on a beautiful campus in Cariari, a very nice suburb of western San José, the capital city. The classroom buildings are modern and built around open courtyards and tropical gardens. AIS is a college preparatory school with a main goal to prepare all students so they are able to enter any public or private institution in the U.S. at the grade level they leave AIS. Graduates attain a U.S. High School Diploma and the school provides the opportunity for students to complete the National Baccalaureate of the Costa Rican Ministry of Education.
What distinguishes AIS from other international schools is its family-oriented environment and high teacher to student ratio. American International School is unique in that the administration, teachers, and staff share a cordial relationship with all of the students. The school's Board of Directors intends to keep classes and the overall size of the school small. Average class size is approximately sixteen, allowing us to offer our students additional personal attention and interaction.
Over the past five years, practically 100% of our students have entered universities of their choosing worldwide. Our counselors work closely with each student to ensure that the application process is competently fulfilled. In addition, our Advanced Placement courses have allowed graduates to earn college credit upon entrance to their respective university.
AIS teachers are experienced, knowledgeable, and passionate in their duties of educating our students. Textbooks are imported from the U.S. and AIS uses the same learning standards applied to students stateside. While all instruction is in English, all students are required to learn Spanish and French is offered as an elective.
American International School is a fully accredited institution by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), a U.S. organization that oversees the quality of over 200 schools in Latin America and over 40,000 schools and colleges in the U.S. Approximately half of the teachers at AIS are U.S. citizens and many others are trained and possess credentials from the U.S.
