Embark on a Voyage of Learning

Students at the Centre of Everything We Do

The International School of Hamburg (ISH) was founded in 1957 as the first international school in Germany. We are an independent, coeducational day school which offers an educational program delivered in English from Kindergarten (Primary 1 age 3) right through to university entry qualification (Grade 12). Our student body reflects Hamburg’s multicultural city status numbering over 700 from over fifty nationalites.

ISH is proud to be an IB World School. Our Secondary School has offered the IB Diploma Programme since 1978 and since then added the Career-related Programme (CP) for students aged 16 to 18 years who wish to engage in career-related learning while gaining transferable and lifelong skills in applied knowledge, critical thinking, communication, and cross-cultural engagement. Leading up to the IB DP, we offer the IB MYP designed for students aged 11 to 16 years and provides a framework of learning, which encourages students to become creative, critical and reflective thinkers.

At Junior School level we offer the International Primary Curriculum (IPC) which provides children aged 3 to 5 years with subject goals, personal learning goals, and uniquely international learning goals.

A Mosaic of Nations

The language of instruction is English, nonetheless, a multitude of languages thrive at ISH, supported through programmes offered by the Department of Modern Languages and our well-established Mother Tongue Programme. Students from countries where English is not their native language have the extra support of English as an Additional Language (EAL), a programme that addresses their social, emotional and academic development throughout the grade levels.

Our teachers and administrators' backgrounds are as diverse as our students. Faculty members come from the four corners of the globe while our 15-member Board of Directors is comprised of professional people from in and around the community, as well as parents, and teachers

Education Beyond The Classroom

Our school’s mission is to provide our students with an international education which seeks to develop their full potential and to foster understanding, respect for others, freedom of thought and expression, enjoyment of learning and personal responsibility. Our students and their successes in and outside of the classroom illustrate our commitment to this mission and to the future of our global citizens.

The International School of Hamburg is also accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC) and the Council of International Schools (CIS) and is an active member of European Council of International Schools (ECIS), Northwest European Council of International Schools (NECIS), Association of German International Schools (AGIS).
