As early as 1931, American women living in Berlin joined together and established a social club, the American Women’s Club. After World War II, officers’ wives took over the organization to fulfill a need in their military community. After the withdrawal of the allied troops from Berlin, American women who remained in the city decided to carry on the role of the club and founded  the AWC of Berlin e.V. in 1994. It is a non-profit, non-political women’s club.
It is also  part of the Federation of American Women’s Clubs Overseas (FAWCO). FAWCO, an NGO with special consultative status to the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations, is an international organization of over 70 independent clubs and associations with a combined membership of nearly 18,000 in 35 countries worldwide. FAWCO serves as a support network for its members and is active in U.S. citizens’ issues and global concerns for education, environmental awareness, health, human rights, and women’s and children’s rights in particular. Through the FAWCO Foundation, FAWCO offers scholarships and funds for Development Grant projects proposed by the Member Clubs. In 2006 the AWC Berlin hosted the annual FAWCO conference to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the organization in the city where the first one was held in1931. The five FAWCO clubs in Germany (Berlin, Hamburg, Cologne, Düsseldorf and Frankfurt) are in close contact and meet regularly at Regional conferences.
The AWC of Berlin was established to promote the unity of the American community, to keep up traditions such as Halloween and Thanksgiving, and to enrich life in Berlin. Its purpose is to further social contact, to provide information about the community, to reach out to their German hosts and to promote charitable programs.
