Located in Seeheim-Jugenheim (near Darmstadt), this is Hessen's first public international school. The primary and secondary State International School (SIS) represents a pilot project in Germany - a public school where the language of instruction is English. Opened in 2005, the SIS is located on the campus of the Europaschule Schuldorf Bergstraße and shares facilities with this large German comprehensive school.
It follows the International Primary Curriculum (IPC), incorporates intensive language programs in German and is designed to prepare students for the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE), as well as for either the International Baccalaureate (IB) diploma, or the German high school diploma (Abitur).
The school offers a full day care program (7:30 am - 6:00 pm), meals and extracurricular activities. Because the school is publicly owned, there is no tuition to pay, but rather a 270 euro monthly fee for after-school care. Currently, 160 children attend the school, but an 8 million euro construction project will raise the school's capacity to nearly 600 students by the school year 2010/2011.
